Why wintergreen oil is a great addition to your home natural remedies

If you’re interested in natural home remedies, wintergreen essential oil is one of those key ingredients you’ve got to have on hand. The sweet, minty fresh oil of wintergreen works wonders for all kinds of aches and ailments. Just a few drops are powerful enough to help cure tummy aches, migraines, monthly cramps, and more — and at just a fraction of the cost of over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs.

WONDERFUL WINTERGREEN OIL USES

Oil of wintergreen is incredibly powerful and should always be diluted in a carrier oil like coconut, grapeseed, or jojoba, before topical application. It can also be combined with other essential oils to create all kinds of aromatic remedies.

For pain

The main active ingredient in wintergreen essential oil is a super strong natural pain killer called methyl salicylate. It’s this ingredient that helps wintergreen fight the aches and pains caused by menstruation, arthritis, headaches, etc.

Try swapping your drug store acetaminophens for a soothing blend of wintergreen essential oil, peppermint, and ginger. This remedy can be applied to the temples, neck and back for immediate headache relief.

For hunger

When afternoon cravings have you feeling weak in the knees, let the fresh, minty scent of wintergreen give you strength. Gargle it in a homemade mouthwash, sniff a little from an oil diffuser, or better yet, pop some organic wintergreen mints!

For digestion

Next time you’re feeling bloated or nauseous, skip the Pepto-Bismol in favor of a more natural remedy. Rubbing a little homemade wintergreen mixture can reduce tummy muscle spasms, improve blood flow, and soothe your gastric lining.

For energy

If you’re feeling a little fatigued, inhale a little wintergreen oil for an awakening boost or rub a little on your wrists, neck and chest to fight sleepiness.

For a cold

Add some wintergreen to your oil diffusor or vaporizer to fill the air with its aromatic properties. This will work wonders for congestion and respiratory issues, plus your home will smell ah-mazing!

For skin and hair

Oil of wintergreen is a natural antiseptic and astringent so it’s great for fighting acne. Add a couple drops to some jojoba oil for an on-the-spot treatment. Add a couple drops of wintergreen to some coconut oil for a natural scalp treatment (dandruff be gone!)

As with any essential oil, it’s important to do your research on brands, ingredients, and potential risks. For a short list of facts on essential oils and how to use them safely and effectively, check out this super handy post on the Crunchy Betty blog (thanks Betty!).
