5 ideas for outdoor family outings on the cheap

Spending quality time with your loved ones is important, but planning fun things to do on family outings can be exhausting and expensive, especially in the winter. So we put on our family activities thinking caps and knocked out this rad list of cold weather fresh n’ fun things to do this weekend — on the cheap!

This list is short, but it should keep you busy for at least a few weekends of fun, family activities. You can help keep the ball rolling by adding your favorite cost-effective family outings in the comments below.

1. VISIT YOUR LOCAL WINTER FARMERS MARKET

Since the shopping has to be done for your Saturday night feast anyway, why not turn chores into fun family outings? Explore what local vendors have to offer and plan your meal around fresh, seasonal items. When you get home, get the kids to help with the cooking, too. Score!

2. CLEAN UP THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Work a little social do-gooding into your family outing this weekend by taking a walk to the park and picking up some trash along the way. Bring some disposable gloves, a few garbage bags, and a whole lotta love. You’ll feel great about cleaning up your ‘hood and you’ll be teaching the kids a fantastic lesson about the importance of giving back.

3. SHOVEL THE DRIVEWAY, AND YOUR NEIGHBOR’S TOO!

Okay, so shoveling snow doesn’t really sound like one of those typical fun things to do with your family. But trust us, once you get everyone bundled up and outdoors, shoveling will be a breeze. When you’re done with your driveway, hit the refresh button by popping a couple organic VerMints and have your pack shovel your neighbor’s driveway as well! Be sure to fit in a few snow angels along the way.

4. GO TOBOGGANING

Tobogganing and snow tubing are a ton of fun for the whole family, and depending on where you go, completely cost-free. When you get home, warm up with our favorite gluten free hot chocolate recipe.

5. BUILD A SNOW FORT

When it comes to fun things to do this weekend, building an epic snow fort might top the list. No matter how old you get, constructing an icy fortress never gets old. When you’re done, have a family snowball fight (for which you might actually want two forts). Check out these awesome fort-building tips for maximum outdoor fun (and protection).
